About the job
The Director of Development has primary responsibility to innovate, develop, and execute a relationship-building and revenue-generating program to:
- Identify new, recapture, and build donor and other fundraising partner relationships.
- Establish and execute a grants program.
- Achieve agreed-upon annual operating and special project revenue goals.
- Ensure adherence to ethical, legal, financial, and other best practices essential for a well-run development department and to accomplish the above goals.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Revenue Generation
- Achieve annual and special project revenue goals agreed upon by the Board, President & CEO, and Director of Development.
Individual Fundraising/Grants
- Establish/develop and execute diverse revenue generating programs including major gifts, annual giving, grassroots/community, planned giving, and grants.
Fundraising Events
- Develop for Board and President & CEO approval an annual calendar of fundraising events with budgets and goals for each. Working in collaboration with President & CEO, Staff, Board, and Planning Committee(s), the Director of Development will lead and oversee all elements of event (and post-event) activities to achieve goals.
Donor Relations
- Innovate/develop/execute diverse donor relations activities including gift acknowledgement and naming recognition programs to show appreciation to, and build relationships with, donors.
Marketing/Communications
- To achieve development goals, the Director of Development and Director of Marketing & Creative Design will work together to write, design, produce, distribute, and release digital/hard copy materials and messages. Examples include e-blasts, fundraising brochures, impact reports, donor acknowledgement materials, solicitations, web site donation pages, media copy, and e-newsletters.
Community Engagement/External Affairs
- Engage and build relationships including with community foundations, chambers, professional networking groups to inform, inspire and identify new donors.
Fundraising Administration
- The Director of Development and Director of Business & Finance will work together to ensure incorporation of best practices and execution of all fundraising administration tasks including prompt donor acknowledgement.
Fundraising Partner Relationships
- Manage and evaluate fundraising partners to ensure high ROI and goal achievement.
Budgeting and Reporting
- Draft annual development budgets; provide monthly progress reports to Board, Finance Committee, and President & CEO. Attend monthly Board and Finance Committee meetings.
Professional Development and Best Practices
- Engage in professional networking organizations (for example, Planned Giving Advisory Council, Association of Fundraising Professionals, Association for Healthcare Philanthropy) for professional development and to stay abreast of evolving best practices; keep Board, President & CEO and Staff apprised of important developments
Other
- Other duties as assigned
Performance Requirements:
- 5+ years fundraising experience, preferably in health care or human services, with a proven track record of achieving measurable goals including revenue.
- Major gifts experience (prospect identification, cultivation and closing) and fundraising events experience required.
- Leading and executing successful fundraising events strongly preferred.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and technology-proficiency essential; experience with fundraising database management systems (for example, Raiser’s Edge, Exceed!) beneficial.
- Self-starter, high initiative to accomplish, high integrity, and team player required.
- Passion for RMHC SWFL mission desired.
Physical Demands:
- Requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to move about and may require lifting of up to 15 pounds.
Work Environment:
- Position is in a well-lighted office environment. Occasional evening and weekend work. May be exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time.
